Magazine Advertisement

Here is our magazine advert which we made for our song "Look At Me Now. We used a magazine advert to promote our album which we have made which is called Fallen Angel. We decided to add the wings which were put on Ignatius in the magazine advert to represent The Fallen Angel. As you can see we had the Def Jam Recording logo to be shown as our recording label. We then added a quote which we made which was "the remix is even more dynamic than the original" from Daily Mail. We also had a list of the artists to promote each of them as we have all made a song on you tube to help get us more known. We've made the name of song which we made a music video to quite large as it will then stand out alot and be very eye catching towards the audience. At the bottom we then have the release date and the website to show more information about our rap group just in case anyone else from our audience wants to know more about our group. The reason why we chose the colours white and purple were the contrast out the album cover and our colour scheme was a light washed out tint of purple.

Music Magazine Cover Research

This magazine is from a very well-known American magazine named "Vibe". The masthead of the magazine is very significant, in many different ways. They have used a sans-serif type font, which suggests to us that this magazine is aimed at a younger audience. The colour of the masthead is also fairly important. The way that the masthead fades from black to red is not a usual characteristic of a magazine, so it is very unusual. However, it links the black of his top, and his tattoos, with the other colour scheme of the magazine, red. With all of the colours on the magazine being contrasting colours, this makes the magazine easy to read, and is also a common characteristic of any magazine.

The main image, in the centre of the magazine is also very significant. The way that he is looking directly at the camera makes him draw the reader into the magazine, as it makes him look at the reader however the reader is looking at the magazine. The colour scheme for the magazine comes mainly from the image. The black of his top make the cover lines black, and they have also took the grey from his tattoos and put that onto the cover lines. This magazine does not include a barcode, which you do normally see on every magazine, but it does include an issue number, a website and a date. This could mean that the barcode is on the back cover, which is an unusual place to have one on a magazine.

This is an example of an existing magazine from "hip hop connection", which focuses on the hip hop genre of music. This magazine cover does have all the common features of a magazine, such as a barcode, date, and the issue number. The colour scheme of this magazine, similar to the previous magazine, uses red, white and black colours, which again, makes the magazine very easy to read. There are actually no proper cover lines on this magazine. Instead, they have listed other popular artists in this genre of music. This attracts the readers to buy this magazine, as these are all also famous artists from this genre of music.

The masthead at the top of the page, and in the center, behind the image, doesn't really stand out as soon as you see this magazine cover. The magazine uses a sans-serif type font, which also reflects the genre of the magazine. The thing that stands out the most as soon as you see this magazine cover is the main image in the center of the magazine. As the person on the front cover is one of the top stars for this genre of music, this encourages the readers to buy this magazine as soon as they see it. Another way to help sell this magazine is by including freebies with the magazine. In this case, the magazine includes a free £20 gift card, which persuades the buyers to buy the magazine even more.

This is another fairly popular music magazine named "XXL". The title of this magazine is a different colour to the rest of the front cover, and half of it is also covered by the main image. This is significant because it makes the title stand out, but also at the same time, it makes the main image stand out too. Above the title, there is a sell line. Sell lines aren't included on all magazines, but if they are, it gives the magazine more attractive. The subject of the main image of this magazine is wearing very dark clothing, and does not have much colour at all. I have noticed this for the majority of the magazine covers that I have analyzed, that they do not have much colour in them at all. Even though this is the case, the images on the cover of the magazines do tend to stand out.

This magazine does have all of the common characteristics of a magazine, such as the barcode, the date, and the price, which are all in the bottom right hand corner. With this magazine, as well as the previous magazine cover, it doesn't have cover lines as such, they are just names of other famous artists within this genre of music. This helps to sell, and to make the magazine stand out to the audience. Under Ludacris' name, the person on the cover of this magazine, there is something that could also be classed as a sell line, and also gives the magazine some slang. With Ludacris being from America, it acts as American slang, with the 'yo' a$$', and with the dollar signs being used as the s.

In my opinion, this magazine cover stands out the most compared to the previous magazine covers that I analysed. This is because the main image of Chris Brown actually has colour on it, as he is wearing a red top as apposed to a black top that is worn by the previous people on the magazine covers. Again, this magazine has all of the characteristics of a common magazine cover, the barcode, a website, the price and also the date.

Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory

Andrew Goodwin identified 5 main aspects of music video that the audience should be looking out for. These 5 main aspects were Thought beats - seeing the sound, Narrative and Performance, The Star Image, Relation of visuals to Song and Technical Aspects of Music Video.

To start with i will talk about Thought Beats. The first thing to do when watching a music video is to look at the music itself. You must understand the structure of the song. Next the audience will have to look at the voice of the song. The artists voice is what is extremely unique. As you can see in our video we all sound different when we rap. Tinie Turban sounds more aggressive, Tignatius sounds in the middle of calm and aggressive and SK sounds calm.

The next main aspect i am going to talk about is the narrative and performance. Andrew Goodwin explains that music videos should ignore common narrative. This is important of the role of advertising. In our music video the performance and narrative used by all of us are completely different. In Tinie Turban's scene he is clearly shown as more of a boss, Tignatius is shown more as a dancer and SK is shown as a gangsta type of guy the way he is dressed.

The next key aspect is Star Image. The star image is another one of the most vital aspects of a music video. In our music video the star image is different in each of our parts of the music video as explained above.

The next aspect of a music video is Relation of visuals to a song.  Music video's can use a wide variety of things like images or effects to show the meaning of the lyrics to the audience. For example on SK's rap he has gunshots appearing as he say "buy me an AK" which shown the audience exactly what he was talking about when rapping.

Finally the last aspect is the Technical Aspects about a video. The technical aspects are what hold the music video together through the use of camera work, mise en scene, editing, sound, special effects etc.
Editing and speed etc are forms of the use of camera. Lighting used when producing a music video are what emphasise the main moments of a song for dramatical effect.

What we have learnt from the research of the textual analysis

The main thing our group has learnt from the Textual analysis is how other music videos get the audience to watch there videos. We learnt that in order to attract a certain group of people, we need our music video to have constructive story line flow or a certain singer/rapper representing something.
That's why we decided for each of the rappers to be based on different things such as when SK was rapping as he said "Buy me an AK" you could actually see gunshots with the glass cracks to actually help the audience understand what type of AK he meant. In our music video we had three rappers, Tignatius, SK and Tinie Turban. Tinie Turban represented his religion, SK represented his wealth and Tignatius represented his dancing talent.
We noticed that this is the main way to catch the audience's attention the way that this is what depends on whether people would actually watch and listen to you music video's and would want to buy our song's. We also learned to make the music video different to others, as many look identical to one another, which makes it boring to watch and listen to. We also used our 3 rappers to develop their own lyrics to the look at me now beat, as this is also unique and different to existing videos. We didn't want to copy others, the way that when they make a cover to a song they will usually rap the exact same lyrics as the original artists who actually make the song, this happens quite often.
We wanted to make our music video differently so we all sat down and wrote our lyrics by our self which didn't really make it that boring for people to watch the video. The final thing i learnt from my three textual analysis was how a music video is meant to be structured. We didn't want to make our video look crazy with a lot of effects so we stayed at a minimum. We kept comparing our music video to others such as the main version of Look At Me Now - Chris Brown.
We also learnt how structure, manage audio and visualize effects on parts of the music video which look suitable to edit. So we didn't want to go over the top and add millions of visual effects, as we learnt to keep a balance by looking at existing music videos and comparing ours to others.
